State of AI in Consumer Shopping
A landmark study examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping the consumer purchase journey — from discovery to loyalty.
About the Study
Our research examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping the consumer purchase journey—from product discovery to post-purchase loyalty. Based on survey data from 483 U.S. adults, we identify the trust thresholds, adoption barriers, and behavioral shifts that define the AI-augmented shopping experience. The findings reveal a critical opportunity: consumers are ready to trust AI far more than they currently use it, positioning early-adopting brands to capture market share and build lasting customer loyalty.

Key Findings
AI is routine
Two-thirds of shoppers use AI tools daily or multiple times per week for purchases. What began as experimental has become woven into everyday shopping behavior for regular online users.
The trust paradox
Consumers simultaneously believe AI recommendations are unbiased and shaped by advertiser influence—yet this skepticism doesn’t stop them from spending. Belief in advertiser bias has zero correlation with purchase amounts.
One-stage usage
Seventy percent of AI shoppers delegate to the tools at only one point in their journey. Only 7% use AI across both the discovery phase and the final purchase decision, revealing a narrower integration than the narrative of “AI replacing humans” might suggest.
